Oops.

It's late. I just got back from set.

I completely missed C.'s birthday. Her 40th. I feel like such a cad about that. I wanted to give her a call.

MOVING IMAGES: "Enchanted April"/17 - The Star

It’s gray and rainy in London the day that Lottie Wilkins approaches Rose Arbuthnot at the Nightingale Women’s Club about renting a castle in Italy. There’s been an advertisement in the paper “To those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine” for an Italian castle available to rent, and she really wants to go. She’s lived her life doing things for others, and finally wants to do something for herself, but needs a friend to go with her. Seeming like a faraway, unattainable dream, the castle seems to be just the ticket.

At first reluctant, Rose finally agrees to rent the castle with Lottie, her trepidations eliminated when they drop off their money with George Briggs and see photos of San Salvatore. They advertise for two additional women to help defray rental and housekeeping costs and meet Mrs. Fisher and Lady Caroline Dester. They embark on holiday and arrive in Italy on a cold and blustery night, a tiny bit scared that they’ve taken the step, and at the same time excited to be in a new place.

Each of the women goes on holiday for her own reasons. Lottie is excited to do something for herself. Rose is frustrated that her husband ignores her, Caroline, a society woman, just wants to be left alone where no one knows her, and Mrs. Fisher, an elderly and bitter woman just wants to remember better times.

As they wake in the morning, Rose asks Lottie, “Do you suppose it’s real?” Separated from their real lives in this magical place called San Salvatore, with the sun and the surf and the oleander trees, each of the women begins a personal journey of transformation.

Lottie wants to share the beauty with her husband, Mellersh, and invites him to come to the castle. She encourages Rose to do the same. George Briggs, on business in Rome pays a surprise visit. Lady Caroline does little but lounge in the sun, much to Mrs. Fisher’s chagrin.

At San Salvatore, each woman finds what it’s like to finally live a dream. Mellersh and Lottie reconnect with each other as a couple, their brief separation givng them a deeper appreciation for each other. Frederick, Rose’s husband who’d been having an affair with Lady Caroline, sees Rose in a new light and the two reconcile. Lady Caroline is enchanted by Mr. Briggs, who, since the war, can’t see very well, and is talking to her because of her personality, not her looks. Mrs. Fisher laughs, perhaps for the first time in years, and walks without her stick, a spring in her step.

By reaching for and living a dream for a month, each of the characters touched by the dream of San Salvatore has a brief taste of what dreams could be like. And if they can bring just one tiny dream to earth, why not others?
